The Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre is a large public sports complex situated in the heart of Coventry.
The centre offers a wide range of facilities including an Olympic size swimming and diving pool. Originally built in two phases, the centre consists of a "Wet" building erected in 1964 and the "Dry" in 1977. Due to the age and condition of both buildings, plant and equipment, its operation has become highly energy inefficient. This in itself would not have become an issue however, matters came to a head when during 1998 utilities costs rose by in excess of 40% thus raising their utilities cost by approximately £250,000 per annum.
Following this, and as part of the client's drive to reduce operating costs and raise the centre's environmental profile, BCHF-UK was engaged to investigate and identify potential areas for improvement in both energy efficiency and operating costs. To this end the following systems were presented and are currently under review:
- Upgrade/renewable of BMS
- Introduction of variable volume and pressure pumping
- Replacement of HWS calorifiers with plate heat exchangers
- Introduction of solar thermal heating/hot water generation
- Rainwater Harvesting
- Greywater Harvesting
- Replacement of thermal insulation to all pipework and ductwork systems
- Introduction of variable volume and CO2 control to all supply fans
- Natural ventilation
- Improve building fabrics U value
- Day lighting and occupancy control
- Installation of CHP
- Installation of pool covers.
